As a Chilean native, Sebastián is very passionate about providing students from all backgrounds with the mentorship and guidance he received throughout his life.
Sebastián is the Rowan University Biomedical Engineering Chair of Outreach & Community Engagement, the Biomedical Engineering representative for the College of Engineering DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) Strategic Planning Committee, and Treasurer of the BMES (Biomedical Engineering Society) Council of Diversity.
Sebastián is also committed to outreach initiatives that increase scientific literacy in STEM for high school students in South Jersey and beyond. Sebastián is the Founder & Project Director of BEAM (BioEngineering And Me), a virtual program that connects Rowan University students with high school students via virtual presentations and activities. To-date, 27 Rowan Engineering undergraduate students interacted with over 40 regional high school students and over 75 high school students nationwide through our annual 2-week virtual BEAM Summer Program.
To provide South New Jersey high school students with in-person research opportunities, Sebastian is the Project Director of the RISER (Research Immersion in biomedical Science & Engineering at Rowan) Summer Program, a 6-week program that accepts 10-15 rising high school seniors to conduct in-person research in biomedical labs, culminating with student presentations during the annual RISER Summer Symposium. To-date, 39 high school students from South New Jersey performed cutting edge academic summer research and presented their work in front of nominating teachers, host labs, and family and friends.
