As a Chilean native, Sebastián is very passionate about providing students from all backgrounds with the mentorship and guidance he received throughout his life.

Sebastián is the Rowan University Biomedical Engineering Chair of Outreach & Community Engagement, the Biomedical Engineering representative for the College of Engineering DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) Strategic Planning Committee, and Treasurer of the BMES (Biomedical Engineering Society) Council of Diversity.

Sebastián is also committed to outreach initiatives that increase scientific literacy in STEM for high school students in South Jersey and beyond. Sebastián is the Founder & Project Director of BEAM (BioEngineering And Me), a virtual program that connects Rowan University students with high school students via virtual presentations and activities. To-date, over 130 students learned about current and emerging research areas in our Biomedical Engineering program via our annual two-week virtual BEAM Summer Program that is free of charge and open to any high school student nationwide.

To provide local high school students with in-person research opportunities, Sebastian is the Project Director of the RISER (Research Immersion in biomedical Science & Engineering at Rowan) Program, a 6-week summer experience that places talented students in labs to conduct their own guided yet independent research. To-date, 77 high school students have participated as RISER Scholars and presented their work in front of nominating teachers, host labs, and family/friends during the annual RISER Summer Symposium.
